It was a disappointing night for RSL tonight against rival LA Galaxy. What’s interesting about this match is that looking at every stat other than goals, RSL seemingly dominated with 20 shot attempts versus 8 for LA. RSL also had over 70% possession. Unfortunately, those stats don’t determine results, goals do. And tonight, LA got the goals scoring twice in the first 15 minutes. The first in the 6th minute on a set piece header from MF Mike Magee. The second in the 13th minute by F Charlie Rugg, his first MLS goal of his career.
This was an LA squad that was without five of the usual starters including F Landon Donovan and F Robbie Keane. RSL coach Jason Kreis felt the team may have eased up a bit on the news that LA would be without some key players. The team also received the news minutes before kickoff that forwards Álvaro Saborío and Robbie Findley had been scratched from the lineup, which may have played a part in the team starting off slow. RSL tried to fight their way back into it for the rest of the match and had several chances that they just couldn’t put away. In the end, LA was just too strong and too disciplined, even without five of their regular starters.
RSL will be back at it next week as they take on Vancouver. Kickoff is set for 7 pm MT at Rio Tinto Stadium. Tickets are available online or by calling 801-727-2700. Click here for highlights and complete coverage of tonights match.
