RSL defeated the Portland Timbers tonight, 2-1 at Rio Tinto in the semifinal match of the US Open Cup. The first goal came early in the 7th minute off the head of F Alvaro Saborio that kissed the right post as it went in. The second goal came in the 78th minute on a beauty of a strike from F Joao Plata who subbed on for F Robbie Findley in the 61st minute.
Portland put up a good fight and had some solid chances, but GK Nick Rimando had another fantastic night with a couple huge saves. Portland was able to get on the score sheet in the final minutes after Rimando made an incredible save on the shot of Portland MF Diego Valeri, unfortunately the rebound came right back to Valeri who headed it up and over Rimando. This gave Portland a little more life and made the last couple minutes a bit more tense than they probably should have been.
With the win, RSL advances to the US Open Cup Final for the first time in team history. They will face DC United on October 1st at Rio Tinto. DC United advanced to the final with a 2-0 win over Chicago. DC has struggled this season with a record of 3-15-4 and 13 points. However one of their three wins was against RSL. This is also the fifth Open Cup Final for DC, having won it all in two of their previous four appearances. So expect DC to put up a good fight in October.
