RSL fans were treated to another solid performance as the team defeated rival LA Galaxy at home 3-1. 80+ minutes of the match had fans on the edge of their seats as the score stayed level for all but a few minutes near the end of the second half. The action was back and forth as both teams had good chances early on, including a shot for each team that cracked the wood work.
RSL would strike first in the 44th minute with a shot from MF Khari Stephenson that the LA goalkeeper Brian Rowe got a hand on, but was unable to keep out of the goal. LA would equalize minutes later with a goal from F Landon Donovan in first half stoppage time. Donovan headed a long ball that ricocheted off D Nat Borchers and fell in front of him with a clear shot at the goal. Donovan did what he does and cracked it past Rimando’s right side. Seconds later the teams would head into the locker room for half time.
The second half stayed tight until the 84th minute when RSL MF Javier Morales sent a cross in for F Olmes Garcia waiting in the box. Garcia was able to direct the ball towards goal and past the LA keeper for the 2nd RSL goal of the match. Garcia would add another goal in second half stoppage time after a perfect through ball from Morales put the rookie forward one on one with the LA keeper. Garcia showed his coolness as he fired it past Rowe, recording his second goal of the match and putting RSL up 3-1. Minutes later, the final whistle blew, signaling the end of the match and a critical victory at home for RSL.
In his post-game comments, Coach Kreis said the focus going into the game was to avoid mistakes that allowed LA to get easy goals. RSL lost the last two games at home against LA because of bad mistakes that lead to LA goals. Coach Kreis wanted the team to focus on making LA work for their goals. The coach can congratulate the team for a job well done with this performance.
