The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup gives the winner a direct ticket to the CONCACAF Champions League and if there is one coach that wants this “easy” ticket to this prestigious championship it’s Jason Kreis.

Real Salt Lake is now only 4 wins away from the title and the precious ticket to the CONCACAF Champions League 2014-2015.

The pressure of last year’s elimination should now be off for RSL fans and players after  the tough win against the Atlanta Silverbacks 3-1.

Real Salt Lake advanced to the next round and will be hosting on June 12 at the Rio Tinto Stadium another lower division team the Charleston Battery which eliminated the San Jose Earthquakes and was one of the upsets of the 3rd round of the US Cup.

The tournament is shaping up nicely for RSL especially after learning that the next possible round if RSL advances is at home hosting the winner of Chivas USA/Carolina RailHawks on Wednesday June 26th.

It is now the time for Real Salt Lake staff and players to make a decision to show how bad they want this title. This is especially true given that ALL of RSL’s games between now and the quarterfinals of the tournament at the end of this month will be held at Rio Tinto Stadium, including two league games against Seattle and LA Galaxy.

This gives RSL enough time to get fit, stay healthy, stay focused and make the right decision for both tournament and regular season. And why not put the US Cup as priority to make it to the semifinals at the end of this month and get closer to the final which takes place in early October?

With all these games at home all I can see is nothing but benefit for Real Salt Lake in both MLS League play and the US Cup.

Real Salt Lake has a lot of quality players on their roster and all of them are capable of helping the team get results in league and US Open Cup play.  The question is should Real Salt Lake save their “Key” players for the US Cup match or league action, or mix the line up to stay competitive in both tournaments?

Some fans may disagree with me, but when you play at home and you have a good group of players that can make things happen, why not put a little bit more effort and secure the Semifinal matches for the US Cup and get closer to reach the 1st goal of the season which is qualifying to CONCACAF?

What do you think? Is this a perfect opportunity for Real Salt Lake to “go for it”, and make a serious run deep into this tournament?

Our side of the bracket looks much easier than the other side. Not counting RSL, there are only 4 1/2 MLS teams to deal with.

Great Post. I think we definitely should focus on winning the US Open cup this year. We are definitely in the Cat bird seat for these next few games. Hoping the team puts a lot of focus on Open Cup. I hate that we are not in Champion’s League this year.

It is the perfect opportunity. Hopefully RSL can take it.
